TGIGF
It’s come to my attention that there are some who think my GF name should be dunGinmaster, and not dungeonmaster. I do not believe this is a decision I can make for myself, so I call on the GF faithful to make the decision.
Hear ye, hear ye, the motion is: Shall we re-name dungeonmaster, and make him dunGinmaster? Vote in the comments.

Hey alkies! I will be attempting to liveblog my observance of GF today, beginning around 4 pm EST. I’ll be at The Dead Mule, and possibly The Cave, throughout. If that sounds really lame and pathetic, it is! And that’s why it’s perfect for liveblogging! I’d liveblog a dead squirrel if I could find one before my neighbors scoop it up and throw it in a pot. Fat bastards.
I’ll be using the comments section of this post for the blogging, since it’s easier and I’ll be doing it (like this post) from my phone.
Happy GF! It’s 85 and sunny up here today.

Bessie Smith, Queen of the Gin Songs
What’s the greatest song about gin, or drinking gin, or puking up gin, or mixing gin with (gag) whiskey? Well, hell, I don’t know. But I know there’s been a lot of songs about gin, or inspired by gin, or that merely mention gin in their titles. Herein begins the Gin Friday Official Gin-Soaked Discography. Feel free to add! Edit the entries! Add your own reviews of the songs! Let’s make this the best gosh-darn Gin-Soaked Discography in the Whole World!
And in no particular order:
1. “Gin and Juice”: by Snoop Dogg
Also Covered By:
The Gourds
Dr. Dre
Richard Cheese (this version is so awesome, I have no words to describe it)
The Naked Trucker & T-Bones
Rock Star Club (Dannonball would like this version)
Streetwize (smooth jazz version!)
Tupac Shakur
Vitamin Dub (off the album “Snoop Dub,” The Dub Tribute to Snoop Dogg)
Steve Bequette (Acoustic.)
2. “Bathtub Gin”, by Phish
3. “Bathtub Gin” (different song) by The Floating Men
4. “Bathtub Gin” (yet another different track, this on hip hop), by Sacred Hoop
5. “Cold Gin”, by Kiss
Also Covered By:
Hayseed Dixie
Mark Slaughter
Ace Frehley (solo)
6. “Dry Gin”, by Bodyjar (crappy power pop sensitive boy bullshit)
7. “Face in My Gin,” by Restless (Rockabilly sleaze rock. Awesome)
8. “Gin,” by Amy Correia (good music for killing yourself by)
9. “Gin,” by Audio Drinking Companion (a 15 second death metal rip with these lyrics: “Give me another gin or you’ll dieeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh.”
10. “Gin,” by Boom Bip & Doseone (I have no idea what to think about this song. There were chimes in it.)
11. “Gin,” by The Tiger Lillies (Some sort of musical theater waltz thing. Kind of cool.)
12. “Gin/Wild”, by Mandy Patinkin. (Mandy Patinkin, by the way, has sung every song every written, and you’ve not heard a single version. Shame on you!)
13. “Gin & Milk,” by The Town Pants (An Irish fiddle reel, nice and aggressive. A- )
14. “Gin & Milk,” by the Dirty Pretty Things (punk rave up version)
15. “Gin and Soda,” by Chris Cain (piano bar jazz, nice horn section)
16. “Gin and Tonic Blues,” by The Reverend Horton Heat (no explanation necessary)
17. “Gin Bottle Blues,” by Lightnin’ Hopkins (”Please don’t offer me your wine, I done throwed away that gin bottle, don’t offer me your wine, you know when I used to drink it I liked to go crazy.”)
18. “Gin Clear,” by Five Horse Johnson (Heavy roots rock)
19. “Gin & Platonic,” by Joan of Arc. (Prog rock ridiculousness. And quit punning with my favorite drink, dude.)
20. “Gin & Tonic (Buscemi Remix)” , by DAAU (DIE ANARCHISTISCHE ABENDUNTERHALTUNG). (Sounds very Backporch Revolution-ish. Sign these Antwerpers up! Though this song is perhaps a little too trance and acidic for BPR. Not sure why it’s called the Buscemi remix. I was so hoping for the little rat man himself would do a voice over.)
21. “Gin & Tonic Sky”, by Mundy (Country singer songwriter, not bad. Don’t know what a g&t sky would look like, but it would have to be awesome.)
22. “Gin and Coconut Water,” by Calypso Mama. (One of my favorites. Straight-up calypso. Lyric: “Gin and the coconut water, I cannot get in America.” I say GFNOLA fixes that situation STAT.)
Also Covered by:
Baha Men
23. “Gin Guzzlin’ Frenzy,” by Mojo Nixon (No explanation necessary)
24. “Gin House Blues,” by Bessie Smith (STUPENDOUS!!!)
Also Covered By:
Nina Simone (nearly stupendous also!)
25. “Me and My Gin,” by Bessie Smith (FANTASTIC!)
Also Covered By:
Dinah Washington (Who doesn’t love Dinah Washington? This is terrific. Also, Washington was more closely identified with the song, though Bessie Smith did it long before.)
26. “Mi Gin y Tonic,” Andres Calamaro (Latino crooner rock. I don’t speak Spanish, but I believe some of the lyrics translate as, “I teabagged B.A. Baracus. On gin.”
27. “Misery & Gin,” Merle Haggard (Oh, shit. Merle is great, but this sucks. It’s so bad you have to go out and buy it immediately!)
Also Covered By:
Eddie Spaghetti (A FAR, FAR, better version by the frontman of The Supersuckers.)
28. “Of All the Gin Joints in All the World,” by Fall Out Boy. (DO NOT LISTEN. YOUR BALLS/OVARIES WILL SHRINK. WARNING.)
29. “Oh Gin,” by The Velvet Underground, (Very, very nice bluesy ramble.)
30. “One Mo Gin,” by Fertile Ground, (A kind of great nu-jazz, soul band. I liked this cut.)
31. “Quart of Gin,” by The Prodigals (If you like aggro Irish pub fiddlecore as much as I do, you’ll like this one.)
32. “Red Nuts and Gin,” by I Roy. (This is not a description of av.on after a day at the nude beach. This is kind of light, sweet-hearted reggae.)
33. “She Shook Her Gin,” by Barbecue Bob. (Old bluesman. Fun lyric. The “gin” in question is not the kind you drink, but I thought I’d include it anyway.)
34. “Stinkin’ O’ Gin,” by Orange Goblin (Heavy roadhouse white boy blues.)
35. “Suckin’ A Big Bottle of Gin,” by Joe Ely (cool country swing)
36. “Victory Gin,” by The Menzingers (hardcore/popcore. Your guess is as good as mine on what this song is about.)
37. “Whiskey and Gin,” by Johnnie Ray (cocktail room swing)
Also Covered By:
James Chance & The Contortions
38. “Whiskey and Gin,” (I think this is a different song), by Dance Hall Crashers (They rock, I liked this. I like girls.)
Also Covered By:
Alone at 3 A.M. (too sludgy for my taste.)
39. “5th of Gin,” by The Transitions (Soul from the folks who brought you Boyz 2 Men. About getting a bag of smoke, a fifth of gin, and “can we make love” before I head upstate to Sing Sing. Good times!)
40. “Gin-Soaked Boy,” by Tom Waits. (It’s Tom Waits.)
Also Covered By:
Southside Johnny
John Hammond (Straight-ahead blues.)
41. “Gin Tonic” , by Francoise Hardy. (It’s in French. Pretty. I believe the lyrics say, in part, “I want to lick squirrel gravy off Ten-Four’s bald head.” Like I said, pretty.)
42. “Gin Tonic,” by Vilma Palma. (Argentine arena rock with synths. I believe the lyrics say… oh nevermind.)
43. “The Gin War,” by Cassino (Frothy power pop. I’ve already forgotten it. What?)
44. “Gin Wit No Juice,” by Celly Cel (Bay area gangsta rap battle lyric. Really, haven’t we heard this before? Who can forget the famous “Red Beans With No Rice” wars?”
45. “Glass of Gin,” by Shawn Pander. (Singer songwriter, allegedly was “given” his guitar by a homeless man. I say he stole it but inexplicably forgot to take the talent, too. He probably gets laid a lot, smoky good looks, etc etc. I hate him.)
46. “Good Gin Blues,” by Bukka White (another TERRIFIC old blues number, though this one does seem to be something of a non sequitor. Good gin blues? What?)
47. “Gordon’s Gin,” by The Human League (Exactly what you’d expect. Nice product placement, though! Sorry about your career!)
48. “Hennessey Gin and Juice,” by Dru Down and Luniz (Another entry in the product placement sweepstakes, this time hip hop style. I myself am working on a song called, “I Got Me A Hendrick’s Lady (And A Little Boodles On the Side)”. A twofer!)
49. “I Hate You Gin,” by Cave Catt Sammy. (Roadhouse rock.)
50. “Indian Gin & Whiskey Dry,” by the Bee Gees (!!!!!)
51. “Jakey’s Gin,” by Great Big Sea. (Celtic pub song. Kind of stupid.)
52. “Let the Gin Do the Talking,” by Saffire (The Uppity Blues Women)
53. “Love is Like a Bottle of Gin,” by The Magnetic Fields. (I thought this was kind of great. I’d buy it.)
54. “Gin Instead of Whiskey,” by Morning 40 Federation (Off an EP called “New Orleans Water”)
55. “Gin is Not My Friend,” by Ish Marquez (acoustic anti-folk hopcore)
56. “Gin Lane,” by Marcelo Zarvos (Soundtrack from the movie The Door in the Floor.)
57. “Gin Lemon,” by Gigi d’Agostino (Droney house)
58. “Gin Makes a Man Mean,” by The Impossibles. (Ska!)
59. “Gin Mill Blues,” by Bob Crosby (Whitey’s version of Bessie Smith’s classic. Big band sound, snore.)
60. “Gin Sippin’,” by Ross Golan & Molehead (Reggae rock? Kind of funny.)
61. “Gimme a Pigfoot”, by Bessie Smith (Another Bessie Smith. Found by av.on! Lyrics include: “Gimme a reefer and a gang of gin”. I think we need a portrait of Ms. Smith to go next to Bunuel’s…)
According to pizzle, the soundtrack to GF should have been Band of Gypsys, as drummer Buddy Miles passed away. R.I.P.
However, the soundtrack here in New Orleans was the giant sucking sound of Dannonball skipping GF… Completely unheard of ! SO many demerits. It’s like Santa Claus skipping Christmas! Or maybe more like the Dude saying “no thanks” to a white russian.
Tenfour was in fine form despite having his wisdom teeth pulled the day before. Some mandolin/guitar/banjo/melodica jams were had with fresh squeezed cucumber martinis (see pic) by avon. In attendance were also avon and baracus; a small group indeed!, although crusty joined us later as did a friend of tenfour’s …… Hopefully everyone made out well.
well we didn’t play that song (yet) but we got some bluegrass on nonetheless, despite it being the first GF without pizzle being a new orleans resident. tenfour was on the mandolin, baracus on uke, dannonball on the danjo, avon on 12-string gee-tar and banjo. the first successful meeting of the gin friday old-time country blues and ragtime band. never was so many gin and tonics drank to the tune of boil ‘em cabbage down. we also did roll in my sweet baby’s arms and an original song by dannonball.
*which is a 5-string resonator banjo that has been stripped off a string and a resonator.
… to that girl that goes out with the guy that threw up at Gin Friday that one time!
Congrats to Boston and that girl who…
